33 Days to Morning Glory
A Do-It-Yourself Retreat In Preparation for Marian Consecration, By Michael E. Gaitley, MIC. Picture yourself driving on the 'Highway to Heaven'. It is a long journey filled with bumpy roads, detours, and different exits along the way. But it is possible to travel that highway confidently without making any stops. How? By inviting the Blessed Mother to be your 'I-Pass' on the road to Jesus. 33Days to Morning Glory is a unique retreat in preparation for Marian Consecration. Instead of reciting long vocal prayers, you are invited each day to ponder in your heart inspiring teachings about the Blessed Mother, along with a short prayer to the Holy Spirit. Throughout the 33 days, you will spend four weeks meditating on the Blessed Mother, with a special Marian devotee (St. Louis de Montfort, St. Maximilian Kolbe, Blessed Mother Teresa, and Blessed John Paul II) before making your own special consecration on a Marian feast day. Included in the book are various consecration and Marian prayers along with special devotions to the Blessed Mother. I highly encourage you to begin or renew your own total consecration to the Blessed Mother. I consecrated myself on February 2nd (the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord), and it has made a huge impact on my life. How blessed we are to have a 'Mama' who loves us so dearly. "If you knew how much I love you, you would cry with joy." (The Blessed Mother in Medjugorje). Soft cover, 195 pages. |

The Saints in My Life
By Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, C.F.R. You are cordially invited to a special gathering with Fr. Benedict Groeschel and the saintly companions in his life. Meet St. Ignatius of Antioch, a Father of the Church, who encouraged Christians to persist in their faith as he was escorted to his death in the Roman arena. St. Monica will inspire you to persevere in prayer for family members as she did for her husband and son. St. Teresa of Avila will give you hope as you discover her twenty year struggle with mental prayer. These three, saints along with sixteen others, make up Fr. Groeschel's heavenly circle of friends. Fr. Groeschel shares with you his first encounter with each saint, a brief sketch of his or her life, and the impact that saint had on him. Saints are the friends who will stand by you and encourage you in your journey. Perhaps one or two of Fr. Groeschel's dear friends will become your friend also! Soft cover, 201 pages. |

Mother Teresa and Me
Ten Years of Friendship, By Donna-Marie Cooper O'Boyle. There is no such thing as 'coincidence', only 'God-incidents'. And one such 'God- incident' occurred when Donna Marie was invited by her spiritual director to a Mass in the chapel of the Missionaries of Charity. Little did she know that it was to be the beginning of a ten year friendship with the humble little saint, Mother Teresa. Upon meeting Mother Teresa, Donna Marie says, "… I think my heart stopped for that moment. This same woman who traveled the world ministering to the 'poorest of the poor,' a woman highly regarded by popes and presidents and millions of people, had just spoken to … me." As their friendship deepens through letters and phone conversations, you will be drawn into the special charism of Mother Teresa. Witness her special devotion to the Blessed Mother through prayer and the miraculous medals she hands to everyone she meets. Pray Mother Teresa's special Express Novena (my favorite prayer) when you need a special favor, and it will be answered according to God's holy will. Donna Marie's generosity in sharing her friendship with Mother Teresa will inspire you to see the Face of Christ in the 'God-incidents' in your life. Soft cover, 181 pages. |

The Spirituality of Fasting
Rediscovering a Christian Practice, By Charles M. Murphy. Fasting is a spiritual tradition that has been lost. When you hear the word fasting, do you automatically think of hunger? I did, but fasting is so much more than not eating food. Fasting helps heal your relationship with God, with yourself, and with each other. The Spirituality of Fasting speaks of the religious discipline of fasting, its theory and practice. You will learn about its roots in Scripture and Tradition and how it transforms the body, mind, and spirit. You will discover how skipping just one meal, and uniting it with prayer and almsgiving, leads to a deeper union with God. Fasting does cause hunger, but it is a good hunger … a hunger for God. And it is only God who ultimately satisfies the hunger in your soul. Soft cover, 181 pages. |

Finding Your Hidden Treasure - The Way of Silent Prayer
By Benignus O'Rourke, OSA. Have you ever felt dryness in your prayer life? Where the words just don't come? Where the mind wanders in all directions? Where God feels distant? If so, Finding your "hidden treasure" is your invitation to a timeless path of prayer. Allow Father O'Rourke, an Augustinian monk, to be your spiritual director and guide you in the "prayer of silence". Saint Augustine urges us, "Wheresoever you are, wheresoever you may be praying, He who hears you is within you, hidden within …. Prayer at its deepest is more than words." You will become acquainted with Saint Augustine and his 'struggle' with prayer (and he's a saint!) and be given direction on a seven step journey through silent prayer. We are so bombarded with constant 'noise' that the 'silence' is a healing balm which soothes our weary hearts and soul. Remember the words of our Creator … Be still and know that I am God. Surrender!
By Fr. Larry Richards. Surrender! Does that word scare you? I have to admit that it scared me. The thought of not being in control of your life is a little frightening. But, after reading Surrender! I realized the freedom that surrender brings. Fr Larry, a dynamic retreat master, challenges you to "let go" of attachments that make you cling to the world (and to your fears) and fall into the arms of a loving God. Each of the seven chapters describes a freedom that comes from surrendering to God's Will. You discover how to be an icon of Jesus, how to hear God's voice, and ultimately, how to live God's Will in your life. Surrender! will challenge you to follow in the Blessed Mother's footsteps with your own cry of "Fiat!"(Let It Be!). Recovering Faith - Stories of Catholics Who Came Home
By Lorene Hanley Duquin. This book is a collection of stories of men and women brought up in the Catholic faith who, for various reasons, left the Church. Martin Sheen, an award winning actor, stopped attending Mass because his career took precedence in his life. A racial slur caused Clarence Thomas, a U.S. Supreme Court Justice, to distance himself from the Church. The common thread for each of these stories is the longing, the pull of the Holy Spirit, each person felt to return to the Catholic Church. In addition to the powerful personal testimonies shared, the book also provides thoughtful answers to topics pertinent to our Catholic faith, that will deepen your Catholic spirituality. Recovering Faith is a wonderful gift to invite a family member or friend who is away from the Church to return Home. Soft cover, 201 pages. |

Whispers From The Cross - Reclaiming the Church through Personal Holiness
By Anne, a lay apostle. In suffering and in temptation, Anne highlights the value of contemplating the Crucified Christ. She says, "Whispers from the Cross will direct us and correct us. These divine emanations from our Crucified King will console us and give us courage." I loved the words of Jesus in this book. They have helped me in my grief since Larry's death. I love Anne's "vision" of the Church today, and her call to each of us to live our vocations. I also love her short vignettes, where I learned better how to listen and to speak to someone who is suffering. This book stays on my bedside table. Softcover, 225 pages. |

Thea Bowman, In My Own Words
Compiled and Edited by Maurice J. Nutt, C.Ss.R. Following her mother's teachings, Sister Thea became a bridge of understanding and a peacemaker among cultures. The only African American sister in her Franciscan convent, she decided to become Catholic at age ten and a sister at age 15. It's difficult to pick out one special quote from the book, but the one I love, because I was raised with grandparents and great uncles and aunts, is the one that begins, "I'm an 'old folks' child …. "I cried when I read it, remembering. She is a modern saint of the hectic 1960's, and was interviewed on "60 Minutes." She says, "I believe that if He does not give me what I ask, He gives me something better." Hard cover, 113 pages. |

Listening to God with Mother Teresa
By Woodene Koenig-Bricker. Why not start your morning with Mother Teresa and a cup of your favorite coffee? Blessed Mother Teresa is a woman who truly lived the Gospel message in her service to the poor. She is a woman you can relate to - someone who loved God, desired to serve others, and yet at times felt the absence of God's presence in her life. Listening to God with Mother Teresa reflects the personality of this Missionary of Charity - small, simple, and yet a giant in the spiritual life. Choose from 100 topics ranging from "A Cause of Joy" to "The Future". Listen to Mother Teresa's voice as she speaks quietly to your soul. Along with each entry is a scripture passage which supports her message. My favorite entry is "Faithfulness of God" (#49) - God will never, never, never let us down if we have faith and put our trust in Him. Definitely, a message of hope for the times we live in today. Miracles of John Paul II
By Pawel Zuchniewicz. Pope John Paul II was beatified on Divine Mercy Sunday of this year. I knew a miracle had to be declared on his behalf for the beatification process. What I didn't know were the many miracles attributed to him that took place during his pontificate. Miracles of John Paul II is a collection of stories from people all over the world who have prayed to the Pope or have traveled to see him and have been touched with God's healing power through his presence. What I admire most about Pope John Paul II was his humility before God and before man. In one story, after being shown a picture of the miraculous healing of a five year old boy who had stood next to him, Pope John Paul simply stated, "God does great and miraculous things." Miracles of John Paul II is a book to be treasured, not only for its uplifting stories of hope but also for the beautifully touching illustrations of this blessed man. I now join with countless others around the world in praying for my own special miracle from Pope John Paul II. Hardcover, 194 pages. |

The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist
By Matt Baglio. Have you ever wondered if the devil really existed? You won't wonder any longer after reading the opening pages of The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist. It is the true story of Father Gary Thomas, a parish priest in California, who is asked by Church leaders to travel to Rome for training in the rite of exorcism. Under the spiritual direction of Fr. Carmine De Filippis, Father Gary's eyes are opened to the darker side of our Catholic faith. Over a span of five years, we are taken on a journey of the battle between the lies and the deception of the evil one and the awesome power of God through the hands of the priest. I don't like to dwell on the devil, but I came away from this book with a greater awareness of the battle between good and evil and a deeper appreciation for our priests, the sacraments (especially the Sacrament of Penance), and our Blessed Mother. In the end, God wins … and that's all that really matters. Soft cover, 247 pages. |

A Little Daily Wisdom: Through the Year with Saint Teresa of Avila
By Bernard Bangley. Meet Saint Teresa of Avila … a Carmelite nun whose spirit of reform played an important role in the practices of the Roman Catholic Church. She was canonized by Pope Gregory XV in 1622 and is one of the three women Doctors of the Church. St. Teresa was a great contemplative who wrote numerous books on prayer and the Christian life. This book is special because it gives you a sampling, a smorgasbord, if you will, of her many diverse works. You can read it in its day-by-day format or open to any page for a taste of wisdom from this saintly woman. I will share a couple bits of wisdom I have tasted from Saint Teresa: "Try to focus on the best of others and the worst in ourselves. This will blind us to their defects." (January 1) "Seek prayer and engage in prayer not for your own pleasure but to gain the strength to serve God. We must be like both Martha and Mary if we are to show true hospitality to the Lord." (June 17). We can all learn from Saint Teresa! Soft cover, 188 pages. |

The Story of a Soul: St. Therese of Lisieux
Translated and Edited by Robert J. Edmonson, CJ. On April 6, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI focused the general audience on a saint he says is one of the "best known and loved": the 19th century Carmelite, Saint Therese of Lisieux. He invited us to rediscover this great treasure of the Church through the reading of her autobiography, Story of a Soul. I accepted the Pope's invitation and reread the story of this 'little flower' as she is fondly known by those who pray to her. Saint Therese was known for her little way which meant that throughout her day, she offered everything she did, no matter how big or small, to Jesus. This little way has been such a spiritual aid for simple souls that Blessed Pope John Paul II named her a Doctor of the Church. I promise that if you don't know St. Therese you will fall in love with her, and if you do know her, you will fall in love with her all over again. In her short twenty-four years on this earth, she learned the simple secret of life … to LOVE. That is a secret that needs to be spread throughout our world. Saint Therese, pray for us! Ten Prayers God Always Says Yes To
By: Anthony DeStefano. Many books have been written about prayer, but this is by far one of the best that I have read. In a simple and direct manner, Anthony DeStefano guides you through ten heartfelt prayers God always says 'yes' to. These prayers range from the simple, "God, show me that you exist" to the more complex, "God, lead me to my destiny." Each of the ten chapters offers you a new prayer, scripture references, and the reason why God always says "yes". One morning I prayed, "God, make me an instrument" (Chapter 2), and God answered "yes" ... within 45 minutes ... through a phone call from my friend in need. Take the challenge!! Pray these ten prayers with your heart and hear God's resounding "YES"! Soft cover, 190 pages. |

How To Forgive Yourself And Others
By: Father Eamon Tobin. In the Lord's Prayer we pray " ... Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us ..." It is easy to say those words, but sometimes it is difficult to actually live them. We've all been hurt by others' words and actions, but Jesus' message is forgiveness, not only of others but also of ourselves (which is sometimes more difficult). Fr. Tobin clarifies the meaning of forgiveness and offers concrete and practical steps in forgiving others, God, the Church, and self. This small book offers a big promise… that when we ask Jesus to help us to forgive, our wounds will be healed and our hearts will be open to love. Forgiveness is God's gift of freedom to us. No One Cries The Wrong Way
By: Father Joe Kempf. Why do people suffer? Only God holds the answer to that question. Suffering is woven into the fabric of life and each person grieves in his or her own way. We do know, however, that God is with us in our suffering. Father Kempf provides thoughtful reflections on the goodness of God and the mystery of human suffering, dying well, life after death, grieving, caring for people in loss, and prayer in tough times. Each chapter includes questions for personal or group reflection, suggested activities, quotes for meditation and prayer, and a prayer service to assist in the grieving process. I found my consolation in suffering in a meditation quote by Pope John Paul II ..." Christ gives the answer to the question about suffering and the meaning of suffering not only by His teaching - but most of all by His own suffering... Soft cover, 102 pages. |

John's Gift of Peace
By John T. Mudd. John's mother, Ann Mudd, told us his story in a previous issue of the magazine. John wrote meditations, which he believed were inspired by the Holy Spirit, because he said he never had such thoughts himself. John was killed in a tragic fire and this is the second book of meditations his family has compiled. Ann says, "I am in awe and filled with gratitude. I know now he was an angel on this earth. I know in my heart he is experiencing the dreams he had for each and every one of us on this earth." My favorite meditation, which I read again and again is, "In You, O God, we find great comfort. Please bring peace to the victims of Alzheimer's disease. Although we are unable to communicate fully with them, allow our undying love and respect for them to be known. Bring peace and consolation to the families that deal with this sad condition. Allow them to remain hopeful and compassionate. Although it is like a long goodbye, keep us mindful that this suffering will be but for a moment when considering the eternal happiness that lies ahead." There are about 200 meditations, similar to this one, on every aspect of life. Read one every morning and find peace. Soft cover, 220 pages. |

Holy Hands
By Father Clement Joachim Machado. Father gives us eight wonderful stories that tell how the priesthood transformed the lives of these people. He gives an introduction before beginning the first person account of the story. For example, in the case of Luis, he tells us the dangers of the devil today, including Pope Paul VI's remarks that the devil is real. He isn't a symbol or figment of the imagination, but a very real being with will, with hatred, with intelligence far superior to anything human. Then you read Luis's story of his life spiralling downward because of Ouja boards, psychics, and the occult. Finally, through the holy hands of a priest, he is rescued. You may already have a deep appreciation for the priesthood, but it will increase tenfold when you read this book. Soft cover, 191 pages. |

Direction for Our Times Book - NEW
Lessons In Love - Moving Toward Divine Intimacy By Anne, a lay apostle. "Jesus experiences each of us as His closest family member. Jesus experiences us as lovable and filled with promise. The experience Jesus has of us is constant and consistent in that He does not check in with us once a week or once a day or even once an hour. The Lord has been with us in a continual and uninterrupted fashion. Jesus never takes His gaze off of us." These words, at the beginning of the book, touched my heart and made me anxious to continue. I haven't finished it yet but it's not a book you read quickly. Anne talks about layers inside the Divine Will. She knew five of the seven layers and then was given the sixth: prudence. Oh dear, I completely lack prudence. I didn't want to continue. Then I reread Ann's words: "We must give Jesus our past and let Him erase our mistakes so that we can rejoice in the present, where Jesus loves us completely." I was chosen. I am chosen. With Jesus' love, I can learn prudence, even in my old age. Best of all, this book helps us deal with our marriages. "When a couple is married, Heaven places much hope in that sacrament," Ann says. When Larry and I realized this, it changed our married lives, 38 years ago, through Worldwide Marriage Encounter. The Father called us to holiness together. Make this book your spiritual retreat over the next month or more. Soft cover, 268 pages. |

Benedict XVI - Light Of The World
The Pope, the Church, and the Signs of the Times - A Conversation with Peter Stewald. Peter Stewald asks tough question of our beloved Pope Benedict and he answers honestly. For example, "Now, right during the Year for Priests that you proclaimed, all of these failures and crimes come to light …. " The Pope responds, "One might think that the devil could not stand the Year for Priests and therefore threw this filth in our faces. As it wanted to show the world how much filth there was, even and precisely among priests. On the other hand, one could say that the Lord wanted to test us and call us to a deeper purification." From clergy sexual abuse to which films the Pope likes, this interviewer asks the difficult questions confronting the Catholic Church today. Which questions would you ask the Pope? You'll probably find them here. This is not a theological work but an incredible glimpse into the mind, heart, and candidness of a great and holy leader. Wonderful book! Hardcover, 219 pages. |

Travelers Along The Way - The Men and Women Who Shaped My Life
By Benedict J. Groeschel. This is one of those books you can pick up and read every night before sleeping. You can read one or two short chapters and then turn out the light. Or, you can keep saying, "Well, maybe one more." It's that good. The known and the unknown have shaped Father Groeschel's life and he is a good story teller. I've heard him speak often of Cardinal Terence Cooke and Cardinal John O'Connor, and it was great to finally read why he admired them so much. As you read, think back over your own life and write down those who made you who you are today. Then tell your kids and grandkids about them. Ask yourself, "Will they share me one day as having shaped their life for the better? If not, why not, and what can I do to change that?" Since I love stories, I loved this book. Will I See My Dog In Heaven?
By Jack Wintz, OFM. I never fully understood the 'attachment' to dogs and cats until Pio (yes, he is named after my favorite saint, Padre Pio) became a member of our family seven years ago. Pio is a black and white Portuguese water dog with an affectionate, and, at times, mischievous spirit. I've often wondered the very same question the title of this book poses. And Friar Jack does a wonderful job answering that question. By using Scripture, Christian tradition and liturgy, as well as the life and teachings of St. Francis of Assisi, the good friar assures the reader that God's saving love includes the whole family of creation. Scattered throughout the book are comforting psalms, prayers, and blessings for our beloved pets. I read the last page of this book first, and I will tell you, it does have a 'happy ending'! Traveling Graces - A Little Book of Plane Prayers
By Agnes Cunningham, SSCM. This book caught my attention because my sister had to travel on a business trip and is anxious about flying. Traveling Graces is a little 'prayer book' for those of us who don't like to fly (and those of us who do). From take-off to landing, you will find an assortment of prayerful meditations to calm your spirit. After each prayer a biblical reflection invites you to meditate on a scriptural passage. This is a great gift idea for someone who flies often. My sister loved the book and is taking it with her on all her travels! Soft cover, 79 pages. |

Miracles Every Day
By Maura Poston Zagrans. An elderly stooped gentleman afflicted with scoliosis and kyphosis walks away tall and straight. A young woman in her twenties is healed of cancer. A middle-aged man is able to cancel surgery for the ruptured disc in his neck. The blind see … the lame walk … these are but a few of the miraculous healings you will encounter in the amazing ministry of Dr. Issam Nemeh. A devout Catholic family man and humble gifted physician, Dr. Nemeh prays over a countless number of people from all walks of life. Yet in his own words, "the miracles are just to get our attention." God is the true healer. I was moved to tears reading the stories of those suffering. Yet, I was also filled with HOPE and JOY that God truly does heal, if not in this life on earth, then in Heaven. The Archbishop Wore Combat Boots
By Archbishop Philip Hannan. This book lived up to my high expectations. Archbishop Hannan is a terrific homilist and great writer. Years ago he gave us some of his remembrances to read. Thank the good Lord for finally allowing him to find the time to publish them. His meetings with Jacqueline Kennedy give amazing insights into her little-known spiritual journey, and his collaborative, mutually respectful friendship with John F. Kennedy lasted until his death. The Archbishop's time in combat boots is amazing, as well as his story of his hands-on experience of Katrina. You'll even love reading about his remarkable family. I haven't finished this book because I refuse to read it too quickly and miss something. It is absolutely wonderful. Hardcover, 457 pages. |

A Mother's Plea
By Father Anthony Bus. We are reviewing this book again because it is another incredible story of God's work in the life of a modern-day holy priest. Father tells the story of his struggle to fulfill a call from God, in the face of great spiritual trials. From the poverty of an inner city parish in Chicago, miraculous things happen as Father Bus suffers numerous trials accepting his mission. His Archbishop, Francis Cardinal George, OMI, says of this book, "… a vividly personal story … Father Bus is sometimes desperate in face of the hostile disregard for the Church so prevalent today … " I'll never forget this story. When Life Doesn't Go Your Way
By Katrina J. Zeno. This book, as the cover attests, is "Hope for Catholic Women Facing Disappointment and Pain." It has wonderful stories of suffering sustained by hope, and how God uses what seems to be terrible circumstances to bring about incredible joys. Only God can orchestrate some of the events described here. As I read, my mouth literally opened in amazement. Included are great questions for reflection and discussion at the end of each chapter, making it a perfect choice for women's faith-sharing groups. Soft cover, 157 pages. |

The Prayers and Personal Devotions of Mother Angelica
Introduced and Edited by Raymond Arroyo. On the Catholic best seller list for several weeks now, this hard-cover book is a testimony to the honesty and deep spirituality of Mother Angelica. My own favorite prayer is the one for self control. I feel better knowing Mother had trouble with impatience, too. This book is her prayer journal composed during her dark night of the soul, plus her favorite prayers. If you love her, you'll love this book. Hard cover, 193 pages. |

Miracles, Healing for a Broken World
By Father Stefan Starzynski, with Chris Grzasko. Father Stefan believes if you are ridiculous for God, He will be miraculous for you. This book proves that concept, in spades! He is certainly the most "ridiculous" priest I've ever read about, but the miraculous surrounds him in his healing ministry. Father first tells his healing stories, then the people themselves tell their story from their perspective: a very clever and readable concept. 155 pages. |

Praying With the Saints for The Holy Souls in Purgatory
By Susan Tassone. Susan tells us that the Holy Souls in Purgatory are "silent voices that beg and implore our help." And if we help them today with our prayers and sacrifices, they will return the favor for us someday. In this book, the tireless "Champion of the Holy Souls," as we named Susan years ago, once again comes to their aid by enlightening us on how the saints interacted with the holy souls during their lifetime. She tells us true stories of their intercessions and how we can imitate the saints by our own sacrifices and prayers. She reminds us, once again, that we are "their only resource." Susan also lists seasonal devotions, prayers and novenas. Softcover, 141 pages. |

Be A Man! Becoming the Man God Created You to Be
By Father Larry Richards. Many of us are familiar with Father Larry from Relevant Radio. In this book Fr. Larry helps men rediscover the importance of the spiritual life. He recounts his own struggle to learn true manhood and tells the stories of other men's struggles. He calls men to greatness, in a direct but not preachy way, and encourages them to be strong without being macho. Father minces no words as he tells men to become true heroes, true spiritual leaders in their relationships and families. Ladies, buy this little gem of a book for your husbands or adult sons. It will be the best gift you'll ever give them (and yourself). Softcover, 195 pages. |

Heavenly Healing Testimonies from Lay Apostles of Jesus Christ, the Returning King
By Bonnie Shoemaker. Sister Briege McKenna, O.S.C. says of this book, "After reading the testimonies of many in Heavenly Healing, I was reminded of the words Jesus spoke when He said, 'You will know the tree by its fruits. Luke 6:43' Certainly the Lay Apostolate of Jesus Christ the Returning King has born abundant fruits for the kingdom of God. Anyone who doubts the power of God should read this book." Will You Be My Priest? Stories of Men who Received Their Vocations Through Medjugorje
By Larry and Mary Sue Eck. These stories, taken from the pages of Medjugorje Magazine, are the greatest fruits of Medjugorje, vocations to the priesthood. Reading them, one after another, is an overwhelming experience of God's grace being poured out on His Church today. In our opinion, these 15 men, and the other over 500 men whose vocations came through Medjugorje, are the most convincing testimony to the validity of this apparition site, and we wait in hope for the Vatican's decision. Signs of Life 40 Catholic Customs and Their Biblical Roots
By Scott Hahn. The book begins with a wonderful example of how sacramentals played a very pivotal part in Scott Hahn's life (with great teaching subtly incorporated in the story). He explains, incredibly well, holy water, Mass, angels, the Church calendar, novenas, grace at meals, sacraments, incense, indulgences, relics, intercession of the saints, almsgiving, and much, much more. For each subject, Dr. Hahn gives a brief explanation in a clear, concise, and ease to understand way. Then he gives a short "Ponder in your heart," which takes you deeper into the meaning, with a bible quote and short reflection on each subject. This is really a complete and doctrinal work to teach the traditions and practices of the Catholic Church. You will want to have this book in your library.Hardcover, 275 pages. |

True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin
By St. Louis de Montfort. This is a very old publication (1700's) and someone gave it to me recently and said she wanted me to do the Consecration to Mary. I realized I'd never read this book before, and what an incredible book it is. After a brief biography on St. Louis de Montfort, the book helped me see and understand Mary in a way I wouldn't have thought possible. The culmination is the Consecration prayer to Our Lady (and Jesus); Mary always leads us to her Son. It is best to reconsecrate yourself each year, so why not on January 1st? Included are prayers and litanies. I can't believe we always had this book in the Marian Center but I'd never read it. What a treasure! Softcover, 185 pages. |

Our Lady Of Kibeho Mary Speaks to the World from the Heart of Africa
By Immaculee Ilibagiza, with Steve Erwin. This is the personal account of the visionaries of Kibeho by Immaculee Ilibagiza (you may remember her book "Left to Tell," about the 1994 Rawandan genocide). Always believing in the apparitions, Immaculee writes a compelling account of the visionaries and their visions.
In 1981, Our Lady appeared to a girl named Alponsine Mumureke in an all girl's Catholic school. No one believed her. Our Lady appeared to Anathalie Mukamazimpaka in the school. There was a girl who was furious at the two visionaries, proclaiming them to be frauds. Our Lady began to appear to her as well, changing her so dramatically that most were now convinced the apparitions were genuine.
In 1982, Our Lady began appearing to more children with no connection to the first three. They all described Mary in exactly the same way, although they were separated by miles and didn't know each other. Our Lady showed all the visionaries "rivers of blood," describing the genocide before it happened. Some of them were killed in the terrible genocide and Kibeho was decimated. The local Bishop has approved these apparitions. Hardcover, 200 pages. |

I Choose God Stories from Young Catholics
By Chris Cuddy and Peter Ericksen. As Scott Hahn says so well in the forward, this is a book written for Catholic young people by Catholic young people. This book consists of 21 stories of young adults and their journey to God and to his Son, Jesus Christ. It is an incredibly honest collection of conversion stories. I never realized all the temptation, media, and worldliness that this generation must deal with on a daily basis, let alone trying to live out their faith in the overwhelming counter-culture atmosphere of this age. What an eye-opener for me. I read this book in one sitting and came away with a new respect and understanding of this generation. It is truly by the grace of God any of our young people are faith-filled and vibrant Catholics. I have a new respect and awe for the people who shared these incredible stories. If you have a son, daughter, grandchild, godchild, neighbor, religious education class, or any young person struggling with the Catholic faith, addiction, or a soul-problem, please give them this book! Moments Of Grace Inspiring Stories From Well-Known Catholics
By Al Kresta and Nick Thomm. These short stories are about how famous Catholics found, or returned to, the Catholic Church or had a life-changing outpouring of grace. The first story is by Norma McCorvey of the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court landmark case, which started legalized abortion in the United States. Next is Chris Godfrey's story, a famous football player for the New York Giants, followed by some of the most famous, well-known apologists and Catholic authors in the business: Marcus Grodi, Steve Ray, Patrick Madrid, Tim Staples, Ralph Martin, Fr. Frank Pavone, Paul Thigpen, Ray Guarendi (I love his story about how his wife and he adopted ten children), and many, many more. We are able to glimpse into their lives and get to know them as people. This is a great book of hope. Give it to someone returning to the Faith. Or read it, like I did, to get to know someone I listen to on the radio everyday. This book shows that nothing is impossible with God. Soft cover, 195 pages. |

A Prayerful Journey With Mary To The Third Millennium And Beyond
By Reverend Anthony Petrusic. This is a Prayerbook with most of the best prayers to Mary.
There are new and old prayers, even Lovely Lady Dressed in Blue. It also contains the Stations of the Cross from the Blessed Mother's view and the mysteries of the rosary. There are many great prayers: prayer for a happy marriage, a special prayer of petition, a prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe, Lourdes, Fatima, Mount Carmel, Knock, Sinj (Croatia), Czestochowa, and so many more. At the end is has the Litany of the Blessed Virgin and a prayer to St. Joachim and St. Anne. This book really breathes new life into prayer time. It's a great value, well made, and small enough to fit into your pocket or purse. Hard cover, 141 pages. |

Amazing Grace For Survivors
50 Stories of Faith, Hope, and Perseverance By Jeff Cavins, Matthew Pinto, Patti Armstrong, and Luke Armstrong. Readers send in these Amazing Grace stories, much like the Chicken Soup series. These, however, are written from a Catholic/Christian perspective. You may remember previously published works: Amazing Grace for Married Couples, Mothers, Fathers, Catholic Hearts, and for those who Suffer.
There are many kinds of survivors: survivors of illness, of course, but also surviving parents of dying children, drug-addicted children, children who are victims of rape, the jailed, abandoned, and much more. All the stories are riveting and it's hard to put the book down. God and hope enter all circumstances.
My favorite part is called Survivor's one-liners. This is a compelling but humorous way of looking at hard times with cute, one-line wisdom quips. One chapter is entitled "All things are possible with God," and this book proves it! If you're having a hard time in your life or know someone who is, this is the book for you. Soft cover, 224 pages. |

Because God Is Real
Sixteen Questions, One Answer By Peter Kreeft. Don't you just love that title? Because God Is Real is the ultimate apologetic book, in a question and answer format. This book tackles the tough questions in a clear, easy to understand way. Questions like: Why do I exist? How can you prove that God is real? Why be moral? Why aren't we happy? Why is there evil? Why must we die? Peter Kreeft gives complete and masterful answers suitable for teens and adults alike. This is a great book for believers, unbelievers, new Catholics, Confirmation candidates, as well as religious education classes; in fact, for anyone wanting to deepen their understanding of the basics of their faith. In Peter Kreeft's wonderful way, some of the answers really made me ponder and gave me a better understanding of my religious beliefs. Soft cover, 236 pages. |

101 Inspirational Stories of the Power of Prayer
By Sister Patricia Proctor. This is the fifth book in the series. You may remember stories of the Eucharist, Rosary, Priesthood, and Reconciliation. The book is about the incredible personal stories that people shared with Sr. Patricia about the power of prayer. I know that each and every time I write a book review about Sr. Proctor's new books, I say "This one is the best yet," and it is always true! Each book is better than the last, and they are all great. These stories are similar to the "Chicken Soup" books, only better for us because of their Catholic components. We Catholics are great pray-ers and believers in miracles, so you know how great these prayer stories are. First there is the story, then a great quote by a saint or from the Bible, then a ten minute meditation. These are excellent as well. If you love Sister's books and want to revive your love of prayer, this is the book for you. Softcover, 276 pages. |

However, this book is different. While it does have angel stories, it has more stories about God's love and concern for us. These stories make you laugh, cry, and know for certain that the angels, saints, and God HImself interact with us on earth, especially in times of need. Graced and Gifted
Biblical Wisdom for the Homemaker's Heart, By Kimberly Hahn. This book is taken from a set of 24 Bible study series on the vocation of marriage. It begins with tips and biblical wisdom and a valuable piece about priority setting. It goes on to talk about all we do as women in the home as homemakers, with practical applications and examples from Kim's own life. I love Kimberly's wonderful insights into how the biblical can apply in life, even in the most mundane tasks. I never realized that preparing food, time management, sweeping, washing clothes and doing dishes can be life-changing! At the end of the book are outlines, questions for study groups, and there is even a great section on buying your next home. I highly recommend this book as a gift for the newly married or the new mom. I found good advice for me, too, that helps me refocus the second phase of my life, now that all our children are grown. I love the way Kimberly Hahn thinks and writes. Softcover, 242 pages. |

NEW!! Serving In Clarity
A Guide for Lay Apostles of Jesus Christ the Returning King, by Anne, a lay apostle. In the very first message of Jesus, on the first page, He tells us "I will make you a saint." Then He says, "I will flow rich and constant graces through you into the world." Wow! Then, incredibly, He says, "You will be allowed to glimpse the fruit of your suffering at times. This will be a gift from Me, this knowledge of the connection between your suffering and the fruits I send to the world. You will know that the peace and conversion of your family members and loved ones is connected to the crosses you carry in quietness." And that's just in the first twelve lines of this book! Don't you think it will be easier to carry your cross if you can see the fruits in your family's lives? Remarkable. In addition to the wonderful messages of Jesus and Our Lady, Anne talks about duty, truth, the Good Shepherd, the invisible reality of God, holiness in relationships, humility, protection through obedience, and about not judging others. She then gives wonderful vignettes of the lives of various people, including a priest, that help you understand the title of the book, "Serving in Clarity." Finally Anne talks about her vision of the Mountain of Holiness. These pages alone are worth buying the book. Finally, the book contains the words of a previous pamphlet, "In Defense of Obedience and Reflections on the Priesthood," as well as all the monthly messages from Jesus, through June of 2008. There is great direction for our lives in these pages. Softcover, 267 pages. |

God's Door Keepers - Padre Pio, Solanus Casey and Andre Bessette
By Joel Schorn. This book begins by giving a short biography of Andre Bessette. He is a saint who I wasn't familiar with until I read this book. Brother Andre was a Holy Cross Brother and Canadian saint. Next, Solanus Casey, a Capuchin priest from the Midwest, and lastly, the beloved Padre Pio. Each of these saints had humble beginnings and were deemed not the brightest. Hence, the first two were literally doorkeepers and Padre Pio was similarly in one of the lowest jobs in his order. Yet these saints were exalted by God and many healings and miracles are attributed to each. Read what they had in common and why God blessed them. I especially enjoyed reading about Padre Pio. At the end of the book there are the feast days and ecclesiastically approved prayers for each of these saints. This book is a truly interesting and humbling read. Soft cover, 151 pages. |

Called By Name
The Inspiring Stories of 12 Men Who Became Priests. By Jerry Usher and Christine Mugridge. This book tells the path that these wonderful priests took to the priesthood. Some of the stories will surprise you, some will enthrall you, but all will make you remember what a holy calling the priesthood is! Some of the priests are famous and recognizable, like Fr. Benedict Groeschel (I always wanted to know his story), Fr. Frank Pavone (known for his Pro-Life work), Fr. Kevin Scanlon, and His Eminence John Cardinal Foley. All these stories show the grace and Hand of God in their lives and reminded me to reflect on the "God Story" in my own life. In addition, this book tells the very nature of these wonderful priests. And God Said, "PLAY BALL!"
Amusing and Thought-Provoking Parallels Between the Bible and Baseball. By Gary Graf. This is a great book to give a baseball fan for Father's Day, or any day. Since I'm a football fan (the author has one for football, too) I asked an "expert" to help me by also reading this book. My first impression was favorable but my baseball-fan-friend loved it! It is my opinion that the Bible part of the book is mostly "tongue in cheek." It did have some great passages and I saw the author's point in regard to the similarity of the Bible and baseball. The baseball part of the book was fantastic. I knew little about baseball, especially its early beginnings, so I found it very interesting, informative, and honest. I'll give this book as a gift to all baseball fans I know! It's a fun read. Soft cover, 175 pages. |

St. Therese, A Treasured Love Story
By Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. Not only will you get to see St. Therese (a doctor of the Church and spiritual leader) in a unique way through the eyes of Fulton Sheen but you will get to know the spiritual, funny and loving Fulton Sheen as well.
This book was written from the talks given by Archbishop Fulton Sheen on the 100th Anniversary of St. Therese's birth. It begins with the autobiography of both Fulton Sheen and St. Therese of Lisieux.
Classic Fulton Sheen, he always gives examples to go along with the point he is trying to make. Sometimes the examples are funny, sometimes profound, but always thought provoking. The whole book is truly wonderful and one of my favorite parts is Fulton Sheen's final farewell written to a friend three days before he died, which for me sums up the incredible life and legacy this wonderful priest left us all. With eleven pages of photos of St. Therese and Fulton Sheen this book is a must have for your home and to give as a gift. Hard cover, 182 pages.

The Heart Of A Saint
Ten Ways To Grow Closer To God By Bert Ghezzi. Bert Ghezzi, who has written more saints books than any author I know of, has selected 10 saints to show us that we too can become saints, just as they did.
Some of the ten you may already know, like Pope John Paul II, and some you may not know, like Saint Roque Gonzalez and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, all will help you to grow closer to God after reading about them. These saints all made the decision to give their hearts whole-heartedly to God- some through prayer, service, social justice, or love of neighbor. Bert Ghezzi tells us that we too can become saints by giving ourselves to God. After each story Bert writes a section called Think, Act and Pray, to reflect on the message of the saint's life and how it can be applied to your own life.
This is a great book that will help you grow spiritually. Hard cover, 168 pages.

Questions and Answers About Your Journey To God
By Father Benedict Groeschel. The book is in a question and answer format in Fr. Groeschel's direct and easy to understand style. Most of the book explains the stages of a spiritual life (with chart). The questions are from a large group of people whom Fr. Groeschel asked to submit questions they most wanted to know about their spiritual life's journey. This book is a great resource for judging where you are in your own journey to God (which is life long). At the end of the book Fr. Groeschel gives an excellent list of the spiritual books he recommends to help with the spiritual journey. In this day and age we need this book! Soft cover, 127 pages.

The Catholic Teen Bible - Prove It!
This Bible is part of the Prove it series that I love for teens (see the summer magazine book reviews). What makes this different from other bibles for teens are the pages interspersed throughout the bible written by Amy Wellborn. Amy Wellborn has written many books and taught religion at the high school level for nine years. Some of the subjects that Amy writes about are: "Does God exist?, Prayer, What is a miracle?, Why go to church?, What about war?" and many more great subjects that teens want to know about. At the end of the bible it lists the Ten Commandments, Gifts of the Holy Spirit, How to say the rosary, the Stations of the Cross, and many prayers. Soft cover, 1,400 pages.

The Fruits of Medjugorje - Stories of True and Lasting Conversion
By Elizabeth Ficocelli. This is a truly wonderful book about the conversions of people who have gone or heard about Medjugorje. Each story is better than the one before. The stories are amazing in the diversity of people that Medjugorje has converted from young adults to prisoners to older men and women, even priests. I marveled at the goodness of Jesus and Mary with each story. These stories remind us that we are all in need of conversion and that we are the children of Mary and what a great mother she is to us all! Our Lord advises us that by the fruits you shall know them - by these conversion stories you will know that the fruits of Medjugorje are good. Soft cover, 239 pages.

NEW! Ann, The Lay Apostle's Booklet
There are two sections, the first: Presence of Obedience, the second: Reflections on the Priesthood. Reading the one on obedience it seemed, at first, it was for those who criticize some laws of the Church, which didn't apply to us. We read on and bingo, there we were, in our prideful arrogance! Yes, it was for us. Reflections on the priesthood is so beautiful and affirming for our priests that you'll want to give one to every priest you know. How tenderly Our Lord and Our Lady love them.

Jesus Of Nazareth
By Joseph Ratzinger, Pope Benedict XVI. This is Benedict XIV's first book written since he became Pope. Using the historical/critical method, Pope Benedict sheds new perspective on Jesus, God, and the Faith. At the core of this book is the question of why Jesus came - to show us God the Father. Pope Benedict traces the Father through the Old and New Testaments, explaining God the Father's relationship to Jesus and to us. (I especially like the chapter on the "Our Father.") My brief description here of what this book is about is only a small portion of the contents. There is so much more. This is not a book that will be read quickly, because of its depth. The thought-provoking words and ideas of Jesus of Nazareth are truly profound. Many times I had to put the book down to ponder the incredible insights I had just read. I consider this a great work of literature by our new Pope. I think you will too. Hardcover, 373 pages.

Left To Tell
By Immaculee Ilibagiza, with Steve Erwin. Her book is on the best seller list. This is an account of Immaculee's incredible survival of the Rwandan genocide. In 1994, the death of the Hutu president started the three month killing of one million Tutsi, including most of Immaculee's family, friends, and neighbors. Immaculee hid in a small bathroom with seven other women for three months, with little food or water, knowing the murderers were looking for her, to rape, torture, and kill her. You will come to realize God's unfailing protection and unconditional love. It is amazing to read her transformation in faith and the maturing of the only thing she had left - total trust in God. An added bonus is her deep Catholic faith presented to the whole world on these pages. Most amazing to me is Immaculee's change from hatred to forgiveness, through God's grace, of the Hutus who killed her family. This book strengthened my belief in God, showed me how insignificant my petty quarrels and hurts can be, and made me take a good look at myself. Softcover, 210 pages.

Prove It! GOD
By Amy Wellborn. This book is the first of five of the PROVE IT series for teens. I love these books because when my children became teens they questioned everything! (Why do I have to go to Church? Why do I have a curfew? and on and on) Written in small, quick, and easy to read chapters, with a few cool cartoons, it answers the questions that teens ask most. The chapter's names are amusing as well as highly pertinent. For example: "I Don't Believe in God Because People Do Such Horrible Things in the Name of Religion." Written in a language and style that will hold teen's interest (You know that God is not the lead singer of Nirvana, right?) At the end of each chapter is a section called, "So … Our Point is …" which really goes to the heart of the matter, without the cute banter. With excellent examples and quotes to bring home the point (Truth is truth so either it's true or false and that includes God.) this book taught me to approach the questions of my young adult children differently. It's a great resource for Religious Education teachers and parents as well. Others in this series include: "Prove It! Jesus," "Prove It! Church," "Prove It! Prayer," and "Prove It! You." Softcover, 113 pages.

Reasons To Believe
How to Understand, Explain, and Defend the Catholic Faith. By Scott Hahn. This is Scott Hahn at his best apologetics! He uses his own experiences, history, Scripture, and even natural law to help readers understand, explain, defend and live the Catholic faith. As always, Scott Hahn's writing is clear, concise, and written in a style that is interesting and easy to understand. At the heart of this book is Scott's examination of the ten "keys to the kingdom" - the characteristics of the Church clearly evident in the Scriptures. For all Scott Hahn fans, this is a must read book! Hardcover, 227 pages.

The Legacy of John Paul II, Images & Memories
By Joseph Ratzinger. How great it is to have a book about Pope John Paul II written by the current Pope Benedict XVI. The then Cardinal Ratzinger pays tribute to his predecessor, mentor, and friend of 25 years.
The many, many beautiful photographs by Giancarlo Giuliani (some never published before), along with Pope Benedict’s insights, make this an incredible book. Each photo is documented as to the time and place it was taken and all are truly breathtaking. Some of my favorites depict Pope John Paul with heads of states, other religious (I especially like the one with Mother Teresa), Ali Agca, and just ordinary people (the ones with the children he loved so much are especially wonderful). There is even one where he is in the hospital bed.
This book will make you laugh, cry, but most of all remember how much John Paul II was loved; how holy and humble he was. I always make available to you the books I love and I truly love this book! Hardcover, 114 page.

Mother Angelica’s Little Book of Life Lessons and Everyday Spirituality
By Raymond Arroyo. Anyone who has watched the Catholic Television station EWTN, knows Mother Angelica. She began EWTN 25 years ago with her wonderful sense of humor, her profound wisdom, and her love of God. If you’ve watched her, you know already what a good book this is.
It includes original prayers from Mother Angelica’s private collection. It also includes her wisdom in answering 25 years of questions live, from a hurting people who called in on her television program. Her deep love of Jesus and her incredible spirit come through in the practical, straightforward, no-nonsense, loving, passionate, sometimes funny, down to earth, sensible advice she gives.
This book can be used as a daily devotional or for answers to questions or problems you may have. Mother uses short examples to make her point, in an easy to understand way. I thank Raymond Arrayo for putting together a book of Mother’s life lessons that I will always treasure. Hardcover, 220 pages. |

Praying in the Presence of Our Lord with the Saints
By Fr. Benedict Groeschel and James Monti. This is a good little book to use during Adoration or any time to enhance your prayer life and your relationships with the saints. Fr. Benedict puts it the best when he tells you when you are at Adoration what to do after you kneel down. He begins the book by giving you five easy steps. Next, each section gives prayers and meditations with a saint or a blessed (it gives the saint’s station in life plus country and date of birth).
I like this book because when I took it to Adoration it truly gave me a meditation to pray about and apply to my life. I felt Jesus’ hand in what touched my heart in the passage I was reading. It’s a great tool for Adoration and to come closer to Jesus with the help of the saints, many of whom were unknown to me before now. Soft cover, 145 pages. |

New Saint Joseph People’s Prayer Book
This is a good old-fashioned prayer book. You may remember the St. Joseph Missal from your childhood. My mother used it everyday of her life. The cover of this prayer book is a sturdy plastic, necessary if you spill your coffee in the morning. It also has a ribbon to mark your place or favorite prayer.
Some of the wonderful and meaningful prayers are from the Bible, indulgences, prayers for special occasions, prayers for relationships, blessings, saints, prayers for self and family, and others too numerous to list. If you are looking for a traditional and excellent prayer book, this is the one for you. Soft cover, 1,050 pages. |

101 INSPIRATIONAL STORIES OF THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION
By Sister Patricia Proctor. This is the fourth book in the series; you may remember the ones on the Eucharist, Rosary, and Priesthood. The book is about the incredible personal stories that people shared with Sr. Patricia about the healing, forgiveness, comfort, and love of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession). It tells what Reconciliation is and what it is not, with a wonderful clear and concise understanding of this sacrament, through the experiences of people, with all their doubts and frailties. I believe this book will change your view of Reconciliation forever! After reading these wonderful stories I began to love the Sacrament of Reconciliation and began going weekly. At the end of the book it gives a "Simple Tutorial for making a good Confession" and an excellent question and answer section that will put aside any concerns regarding this wonderful sacrament. With each of Sr. Patricia's books that I read and review for this magazine, I believe she cannot do as well again, yet this is the best yet. Softcover, 270 pages. |

GUARDIAN ANGELS, TRUE STORIES OF ANSWERED PRAYERS
By Joan Wester Anderson. This is a book about prayer and the miracles that happen when we pray. Joan Wester Anderson has written many books about angels and, in my opinion, this is one of her best. These easy-to-read short stories begin with a lovely quote and tell a true story of prayer, an angel, or a miracle. You will cry, find hope, and especially be convinced that prayer changes things and that God is in control! At the end of the book, Joan provides discussion questions which are thought provoking. In a world of indifference, violence, and a "me" attitude, Guardian Angels will restore hope and faith again. Soft cover, 221 pages. |

AMAZING GRACE FOR FATHERS, 75 Stories of Faith, Hope, and Humor
By Jeff Cavins, Matthew Pinto, Mark and Patti Armstrong. This is the fourth book in the Amazing Grace series. You may remember the ones for Mothers, Catholic Hearts, and Those who Suffer, previously in this series. This one is a collection of extraordinary short stories about fathers. All the books in the series are so wonderful that I knew I had to review this one as well. However, I struggled, because even though my dad died 18 years ago, I miss him more every day. The book sat on my desk for weeks before I could begin reading. Once I started, however, I was glad I did. I found joy, memories, and much more. For me, it was healing, and for you whose fathers are living, it will be a great birthday, Christmas, or Father's Day gift (with passages highlighted or love notes inside that pertain to your father, if you so choose). This book will help you to reconnect with and appreciate the father and father figures in your life. Soft cover, 295 pages. |

IN MY OWN WORDS
By Pope Benedict XVI. The quotes taken from the Pope's speeches, lectures, homilies, letters, and prayers are particularly meaningful in this time of uncertainty. Each quote, short and to the point, tells the reader about the heart, mind, and direction of this new Pope. It also tells the direction and vision for his pontificate and the world. This book begins with a very short biography of Pope Benedict, and then gives the quotes (some like short stories) according to subjects. Some of the subjects are: Truth, Culture, Christian Unity, Ministry, Family and Youth, and Mary. The place each quote was spoken is given; for example, World Youth Day and the date. Pope Benedict has some amazing things to say in some of the most amazing places! Hardcover, 108 pages. |

EVERY DAY IS A GIFT
I chose this book because it is one of my all time favorites. A green plastic-like, non-spill cover hides this plain and simple prayer tool. A short scripture verse, a short reflection, and a prayer for each day of the year with an upbeat meditation, helps me to begin each day in a thoughtful, positive, prayerful way (even when I'm rushed or not feeling prayerful or positive.) Each day something will stay in my mind to reflect on, whether it is a quote by a saint, the bible verse, or a word or phrase in the wonderful meditations, to keep me centered on God. I love this book because it helps me remember that every day is truly a gift from God. Soft cover, 190 pages. |

THE MIST OF MERCY
NEW!! This long awaited NEW book by Anne, a lay apostle, on the subject of Purgatory has just been released. It also has a section on spiritual warfare. Anne relates her experience as she recalls trips to the very depth of Purgatory with Jesus at her side. Most interesting is her description of the many levels of Purgatory as an incredible display of God's mercy to souls. You won't be able to put this book down once you begin reading. It will change the way you live your life. What do you think people feel most in Purgatory? Remorse? No! Anne says what they feel most is security. In the section on spiritual warfare, Anne gives insights into recognizing the seemingly innocent traps that the evil one places in our way as we climb the mountain of holiness. These are indispensable, heaven-sent words of wisdom. Every Catholic, every Christian, and hopefully every non-Christian who reads this book will long remember and treasure its words. COMPENDIUM - CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
This work, by a commission of bishops appointed by Pope John Paul II, over which Benedict XVI (then Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger) presided, is a synthesis of the Cathechism of the Catholic Church, which contains all the essential and fundamental elements of our faith. The Compendium was written to make the Catechism more widely known and understood. Using reference numbers, it helps readers to refer back to the Cathechism, if needed. There are four parts to the Compendium: 1. Profession of Faith 2. Celebration of Christian Mystery 3. Life in Christ 4. Christian Prayer I love the format of the Compendium, which is question and answer (called dialogue format). This format was chosen for better understanding and easier memorization.Included throughout the text are beautiful artistic images and pictures, which make it not only informative but a work of art. Lastly, there are traditional Catholic prayers, both in Latin and English, and a section called Formulas of Catholic Doctrine, which includes the Beatitudes, Five Precepts of the Church, Seven Corporal Works of Mercy, Gifts of the Holy Spirit, and more. Soft cover or hardcover, 204 pages. |

WHY DO WE BELIEVE? Strengthening your Faith in Christ
By Fr. Benedict Groeschel. This book could have been titled simply Faith! It concerns itself with Faith in God, Faith in Christ, Faith in the Church. If you have any doubts or questions about faith, this is the book for you. I love the way Fr. Groeschel writes. He gives a statement, explains it in an easy to understand way, and then gives an example (you'll love his examples). With my own young adult children I used the part about why we should go to Church. "Jesus didn't establish a T.V. program. He established a Church." This is a great book, short and to the point. |

PADRE PIO IN AMERICA
By Frank M. Rega. Padre Pio often said that he wanted all Americans to be his spiritual children and many are. Did you know that Padre Pio's father came to America to work so he could support his family? One of the first and closest friends from America was Mary Pyle, a wealthy aristocrat from New York. Mary was so close to Padre Pio that each of his parents lived with her before their deaths. She took many Americans into her house who were in Italy to see Padre Pio. It is not surprising that America was very involved with Padre Pio and all his projects, especially after the Second World War, when the American soldiers constantly visited Padre Pio and brought their devotion to him home to their families. The book begins with a biography of Padre Pio, with testimonies, stories, and funny antidotes. God bestowed wonderful gifts on this saint in his lifetime. The book tells of his spiritual children, his doctors, his priest brothers, his death, and his work on the hospital that he began. His legacy lives on, especially in his encounters with his beloved Americans. There are pictures of his parents, Mary Pyle, and more. Learning how many Americans were involved in Padre Pio's life and work was amazing. You will love reading how he affected their lives, as only Americans can tell their story. Soft cover, 308 pages. |

We are offering this book because after seeing the movie "Therese," you will want to know more about this incredible saint. What I consider to be one of the best biographies of St. Therese of Lisieux will have you enthralled. It is complete in the details of St. Therese and her life; with facts that I didn't know, even after reading many books about her. For example, did you know that her devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus was for the conversion of the Godless and that roses weren't her favorite flower? What a great intercessor Saint Therese is! Even if you have a life-long devotion, like I have, or know very little about St. Therese of Lisieux, you will love this book. Soft cover, 336 pages. |

By Raymond Arroyo, Mother Angelica is the founder of the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN), the first Catholic Cable Network. GOD IS NEAR US, THE EUCHARIST, THE HEART OF LIFE
By Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, Pope Benedict XVI. It is appropriate that the last of the Eucharist books that I review for the Year of the Eucharist is by our new Pope. First printed in 2001, when Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger was Prefect of the Congregation of the Faith, this compelling book shows us the biblical, historical, and theological dimensions of the Eucharist. Taken from sermons of the Cardinal, it shows how the Eucharist is the very core of our faith and the life of our new Pope, and of ours as well. This book is a true theological treasure on the Eucharist. Soft cover, 152 pages. |

WE HAVE A POPE, BENEDICT XVI
By Matthew Bunson. Unlike the quick books about our new Pope flooding the market now, this one was several years in the making. I have ordered several books about Pope Benedict XVI in the last few weeks so I could find the best one to review for this magazine. I think I found it. It is unique and comprehensive in many ways. In the beginning of the book there is much about John Paul II and the role Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger played in the Vatican, the funeral, the Funeral Mass, and afterwards, as only a Catholic can tell it. It is also unique and informative about who was specifically in the "running" for the 265th election as Pope, with names and information about each and the process of the election. Also, there is a time line of Pope Benedict's life and what was happening in the world at that time. There are 17 pages of wonderful pictures of this Pope. You can read in his own words why he chose the name Benedict, how he met John Paul II and why that Pope chose Cardinal Ratzinger to be Prefect of the Congregation for the Faith (for the next 24 years the cardinal had the tough job of dealing with the problems of the Church). Read about Benedict during the Nazi years, about this incredible theologian, writer, his contribution to the Second Vatican Council, and his faithfulness to the Church even against Marxism. I've told you my favorite parts of this book but there is still so much more. You will want this for your permanent library. Soft cover, 238 pages. |

Father Stephen Barham said of Susan Tassone before he died, "Susan wears you out talking about the Holy Souls, but you keep coming back for more." Her excitement for them is contagious. FOREVER A PRIEST
By Father Thomas P. McCarthy, C.S.V. On June 5, 1996, 76 year old Fr. Tom McCarthy was concelebrating Mass in the little chapel of the Audrey Santo home in Worcester, Massachusetts. At the moment of the elevation, a small host lying on the paten began to bleed. Fr. McCarthy witnessed the event with his own eyes and his life would never be the same again. He was catapulted out of retirement to give witness. However, this is only the culmination of a life of poverty, suffering, and the incredible joys of the priesthood in Father Tom's life. Do we have saintly priests among us? Read this book and you'll shout "yes" in joyous acclamation. Soft cover, 240 pages. |

201 INSPIRATIONAL STORIES OF THE EUCHARIST
By Sister Patricia Proctor. Our Holy Father has declared this the year of the Eucharist. Keeping with that theme, I have selected another great book on the Eucharist. I love this book! The stories are short, faith-filled, healing-filled, love and joy-filled; wonderful stories that remind the reader that the Eucharist is our greatest treasure and much, much more. Sister Patricia Proctor is with the cloistered community of the Poor Clares in Spokane, Washington. One of my favorite parts of the book tells the stories her religious sisters have contributed - and who better than nuns, centering their lives around the Blessed Sacrament. Most of the stories, however, are from lay people, sharing their life experiences. The last pages contain the Encyclical letter of Pope Paul II, ECCLESIA CE EUCHARISTIA, and 50 pages of the absolutely best Holy Communion prayers every written and compiled - by Reverend Lawrence G. Lovasik. The genuine, ordinary, sincere, real life stories and teachings of this book will make you want to share it with everyone! Soft cover, 360 pages. |

THERE ARE NO ACCIDENTS
By Father Benedict Groeschel, with John Bishop. On the evening of January 11, 2004, while crossing the street in an airport, Fr. Benedict was struck on his right side by a car. The accident shattered his arm, broke his leg in two places, and gave him a severe head injury. At first, he was not expected to live. This book has two parts: the first takes place before the accident, the second after the accident. Part one is an interview done with John Bishop asking Fr. Benedict about his priesthood (which is a great story), his work with Mother Teresa (funny and insightful), the starting of his own mission with the poor, problems in the church and much, much more. Part two is post accident. Fr. Benedict talks candidly about perseverance in suffering, hope in desperate situations, and about the two principles on which he has built his life - they have not changed, even during the difficult time after the accident. He is wonderfully open, which gives us all a look into the life of this incredible priest. This book is funny, insightful, candid, hopeful, sad, happy, and a must read for all of us who love Fr. Benedict Groeschel. (Isn't that all of us?). Softcover, 124 pages. |

SWEAR TO GOD - THE PROMISE AND POWER OF THE SACRAMENTS
By Scott Hahn. "The most solemn, majestic, and beautiful gifts that Jesus Christ gave to the world are His sacraments. He endowed them with unprecedented and unparalleled power - power to change lives, save souls, and share God's very life." In Scott Hahn's newest book, he delves into the sacraments: their doctrine, rituals, history, symbols, and conventual aspects. He also gives us the biblical and the Church's tradition on each of the sacraments. He gives us a clear and concise understanding of the sacraments and a new love for them, as well. This is another good book by Scott Hahn to have for your library. Hardcover, 230 pages. |

MEDJUGORJE MIRACLES OF PHYSICAL HEALINGS
By Larry and Mary Sue Eck. That’s the title of the new book we’ve compiled and edited. People often say that Medjugorje has no physical healings, like Lourdes. Wrong! We decided to look through all 55 of our issues and see if we had enough physical healings to fill a book. We had too many. Like a magazine, a book is done in a format of so many pages and we decided to keep the cost down and go for about 200 pages. We chose enough stories to fit into that number. We also added a sixteen page, full color section so readers can see the people who are sharing their story. Some of the stories we included are incredible healing stories, like Colleen Willard’s, Artie Boyle’s, and Jerry Drumm’s. But there are others, like Loretta Young and her broken foot. She walked all over Medjugorje on it without pain, learning how badly it was broken only when she arrived home and had it x-rayed. We simply had to include the story of the plane crash in Sioux City, Iowa. That wasn’t a healing but so many people survived that crash, who should have died in a fiery explosion, that we know those Medjugorje pilgrims praying together to Our Lady, on the future site of Trinity Heights, made the difference. It’s one of the greatest miracles of airline crash survivals. Many of you who have read this magazine since its birth in 1990, will have read every one of the stories in this new book. However, we don’t think any other American book on physical healings in Medjugorje has been printed. So, this will be a great gift for those skeptics (priests, sisters and lay people alike) who aren’t impressed with conversion stories, great and numerous though they are. |

Written by Father Frank Chacon and Jim Burnham. These large-sized, soft-cover handbooks give clear, compelling answers to the most common objections Catholics get about their faith. THE DOLOROUS PASSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST
By Venerable Sr. Anne Catherine Emmerich. To make your Lent (and your year) the most meaningful yet, here is the book that inspired Mel Gibson to do a movie on the Passion of Christ. Faithful to the Bible and with a Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur, this book is a heart-rending detailed account of Our Dear Lord¹s passion from Holy Thursday until the Resurrection. The book begins with a description of Anne Catherine, a German Augustinian nun (1774-1824). The life of this holy mystic and victim soul, including her stigmata, suffering, ecstasies and visions is incredible. The account given to Sr. Emmerich by God of the events of Our Lord¹s suffering and death, lasting her whole life, are filled with surprising intimate detail. Truly a book you will read each Lent and never forget! Soft Cover, 282 pages. |

THE POETRY OF JOHN PAUL II
Roman Triptych Meditations You'll see a whole new side of Pope John Paul II when you read his poetry. These are the only three poems written and published during John Paul II's pontificate, thus far. In the first poem, "The Stream," the pope revels in the wonder and beauty of the natural world. In the second poem, the Sistine Chapel becomes the background for reflection on his own mortality. Finally, the third poem is a reflection on sacrifice and the love of God for humanity. The book contains pages of the poems in the pope's own handwriting, even two with words and sentences crossed out. The poetry is beautiful but simple: "How amazing is Your silence in everything in all that on every side unveils the world of creation about us ..." This book is a treasure. Hardcover, 40 pages. |

Priest, Portraits of Ten Good Men Serving The Church Today By Michael Rose In light of the recent scandals concerning the priesthood, Michael Rose has written this book to remind us just what it means to be a good, holy priest living a quiet life of love, prayer and service in today's society. These true stories of ten real priests, some old, some young, from different backgrounds, who work with the poor or work with the powerful, show us that although the ranks have thinned, the priesthood flourishes with priests who have humility, charity and most of all courage. Read how one frail pastor of an inner-city church calmly held Easter services while rioters surrounded his church and another pastor gave homilies calling for openness to life that led to a parish conspicuously full of babies. Michael Rose does not shy away from the controversial issues and deals with them honestly and with integrity, hoping to strengthen the priesthood and promote vocations in what he believes will be a healthier church. Michael Rose says, "Read these stories and let your faith in the priesthood be restored." IT WAS! Soft Cover: 187 pages |

Mother Teresa's Lessons Of Love And Secrets Of Sanctity By Susan Conroy This book chronicles Susan Conroy's summer assisting Mother and the Missionaries of Charity sisters in their work with the poorest of the poor, or as Mother used to say, "seeing Christ in the distressing disguise of the poor." This book clearly details the sights, sounds, smells, living conditions, people, customs, joys, lessons, fears, hopes, and dreams which the author experienced being in the presence of a living saint. There is realism without sugar-coating the reality of living and working in India with the poor. The words and lessons from Mother Teresa to Susan and the sisters are incredible. The pictures, some never seen before, of the orphans and the dying, will tug at your heart. There are great pictures from Susan's personal collection of Mother Teresa. Soft Cover: 235 pages |

DIARY, Divine Mercy In My Soul, By Sister Maria Faustina Kowalska (St. Faustina). An old favorite of mine that I wanted to read again because Pope John Paul II canonized Sister Faustina. With each reading I feel closer to God and grow in grace and spirituality. Each time I read the Diary I am awed by God's love and mercy for us! This is an incredible book of St. Faustina's conversations with Jesus and His with her. Her poems, prayers, and life of sacrifice, all for the love of God¹s mercy, draws you in like no other book I've read before. Included in the Diary is the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and the Novena to be said for nine days starting on Good Friday and ending the Sunday after Easter. Lord Have Mercy, The Healing Power of Confession, By Scott Hahn. Scott Hahn's new book explains Confession in an easy and concise way that anyone can understand. Using the Bible and examples, he really made me look at Confession in a different way. Beginning with sin, its roots and consequences, he explains the need for Confession, the Catholic practices (including why we confess to a priest) and he gives many other clear explanations of morality, restitution, original sin, our relationship to God, grace, God's mercy, finding a confessor and much more. This book is wonderful if you go to Confession regularly. It breathes new life into this holy and necessary Sacrament. If you haven't been to Confession for awhile, this book is wonderful because it has the rite and prayers to refresh your memory and to remind you just how life-changing Confession can be. 214 pages, hardcover. |

Surprised By Truth 3, by Patrick Madrid. The other part of the title for this book is: 10 More Converts Explain the Biblical and Historical Reasons for Becoming Catholic. In my opinion, these conversion stories are the best and most apologetic-like ones of all three books in the series. This book is called the “convert maker” and that’s a good description of these excellent theologically-based conversion stories. They truly are examples of Protestants searching for the truth. Surprised by Truth 3 is a wonderful book to give your Protestant friends but it also gives Catholics a fresh look at their own faith roots. Softcover: 250 Pages. |

How Firm a Foundation, A Novel by Marcus Grodi. This is an excellent novel about a Protestant minister becoming Catholic. It gives a realistic view of the struggles and life-changing dramatic events that the whole family goes through when the father, Steven, begins to realize that what he is teaching from his pulpit is in question. For a “Scripture-alone” Protestant Evangelical Preacher, to give up everything he loves and was taught to follow, in order to fulfill God’s will for him, makes this novel one you won’t be able to put down! OUR LADY SPEAKS FROM MEDJUGORJE By Andrew Jerome Yeung As Wayne Weible states, "There can never be too many books on the grace-filled messages the Blessed Virgin Mary is giving to the world through her apparitions in the village of Medjugorje." In this book, the messages of Our Lady are arranged in topical (subject) order to make it easier to compare her words with those of the Gospel. Because the messages are in alphabetical order, the first that I have seen of its kind, for me it was like reading the messages in a whole new way. I love what Our Lady says about joy and she answers the question of why she chose Medjugorje and why she is appearing on the earth at this time. This book is a fresh new way to help us not only read the messages but to live them, as Our Lady asks. |
